View Full Version : Where's the fire

Now is the time for Klein to show their quality.
Cycle Loft says Klein will replace the rear triangle, if they have any, and paint it to match. If they don't have any then the entire frame will be replaced, but as they no longer manufacture the Adept line, would i accept a Palomino instead?
Ummm....Duhh!!!!
Wait, will it be blue?
October 31st, 2003, 08:50 AM
P.S.
This will not stop me riding. Cycle Loft says go ahead you cant break it any worse and the new part is on the way and we have demo bikes you can borrow when the part gets here and we have your bike or if we have to build up your new Palomino with your old parts.
I may have to revise my less then favorable opinion of Cycle Loft. Time will tell.

This sounds like a subject for its own thread. I'm sure you can find people with positive and negative experiances in this or any shop. I am hopefull this will be a positive.

Greg- I am glad to hear you had good experiance with Klein. That has been what everyone has said so far, it is one of the primary reasons i chose a Klein in the first place (color was first) i am sure there are those who would offer less then favorable opinions, there is always one right. ummm....did you say you have an Intense...curious

Guess which one i sent last week along with a group shot from the skills clinic. I got a nice responce from them, hoping i was'nt teaching that move in the skills clinic and suggesting i switch from denim to asbestos riding pants. They posted neither pic.

Wooo Hoo! Does that font color indicate the frame color as well!??
Will all your components be compatible with it Bill? (minus that propedal shock that is) Is that proprietary shock on the Palomino a coil over or an air shock? And will your fork work with the Palomino set-up? I'm assuming it will since that frame design can accept those crazy cool Maverick forks and don't those give like 6 inches of travel?

Now theres the Mark we have missed for some time. 6 questions on two posts and a pic in 3 minutes.
Most of the components on the Adept will transfer to the Palomino. The question is, Do i want to do that.
I have a feeling that i want to have a new headset and bottom bracket at least. CK steel set if it will fit and something with a spline set up for the bottom bracket.
The MarzDJ stays.
The Thompson stem stays, but i need a longer seat post and will go with a Thompson there as well.
I need a new front derailer. I am thinking about a SRAM twister. The action on all the shimanos i have had is never enough it seems to activate the gear switching. My friend Derrick has a new Palomino as does another rider i was with recently and both complained about the same thing with the front derailer. Splat uses a twister for the front to solve this so i will copy him.
I have been thinking about going to 8 speed. I need new shifters anyway and the SRAM triggers operate in a way that i have been wrongly using my shimanos for years. All thumbs, up shift and down. I have to check on the 8 speed application for those new triggers. I like the 12/34 set up on the SRAM 8 speed too. Closer gear ratio on the low end.
Those break levers are getting a little worn out too. They are actually off my first bike and i installed them on the Adept after the basketball hoop incident. The Paul levers come in a copper finish. sweeeeeeeet, but not cheep
If i change the bb then i will need new cranks won't i. I like my Blackspire ring god and steel granny. I will have to look into their cranks.
That pic looks like there is a lot of silver on that frame and shock. I will have to go by the guilders supply for some more copper leaf.
The gilded Mavic 521's stay but i will redo them with a professional product to enhance durability.
The shock is a coil and air combo.
p.s. it will be blue.

I had a similar problem with my Adept back in June. The same piece of the rear triangle you show in you pic cracked all the way through. Through the Cycle and Fitness, the shop I bought it from in Stamford, Klein offered to either send a rear triangle of a different color (Mine was the same blue as yours.) or the shop would send them the frame and Klein would replace the rear triangle and paint the whole thing. I chose the new paint job and my bike is now gray, which I really like.
The problem is when I got the bike back, whatever intern they had fix my bike at Klein forgot to put a sleeve or a bushing in the pivot. The bike came back. The shop rebuilt it. I went for a ride... What's that clunking sound??? Why do I feel sort of a skipping like the crank is loose or something? I took it back to the shop and they thought I was nuts. You could push it pull it bounce it, whatever, it seemed fine - no clunk, no noise. Nothing. I took it home and it wasn't until I turned the bike upside down and pushed down on it that I noticed a weird, not hinged, but up and down movement in the pivot. The shop was embarassed, but it wasn't their fault. They got the part from Klein and had me riding in 2 days. All in all I went Kleinless for about a month. Everything is now hunky dory!
Good luck with your new ride.

Do tell more about this SRAM front derailleur. I didn't know anybody else made a front derailleur other than Shimano anymore.
November 13th, 2003, 02:13 PM
I don't know if they make a front derailer either. But Splat has a twist shift on the front and i will have to ask him about it. The big complait over at mtbr seems to be front derailer too. The twister gives you infinite adjustment instead of the one click fits all of the trigger says Splat. I trust his council(but not his welding).

Ohhhh, shifters! My mistake for not reading carefully. Woops!
I think some Norco bikes now come spec'd with a twist shifter for the front and a trigger for the rear. Kinda cool. Norco seems to spec their bikes with a little bit of something from a bunch of different parts suppliers. Interesting to look at their bikes and what comes on them (it is all over the map).

Bill,
You can get both flavors from SRAM for twist shifters,
I have one set that's "FRICTION" style for the front der.- and another set that's "INDEXED" for the front - keep a close eye on the details...you want FRICTION...
Norco's mixed shifter style wasn't created by them - riders have been changing their rigs for some time...actually ever since "GRIPSHIFT" was the name of the company now known as SRAM. About 12 years ago - I set up one of my bike's with a gripshifter for front, and a top-mount thumbshifter for the rear...

Yep CP, I realize it wasn't Norco's invention, but it's cool that they hear about what riders are doing and what they want and decide to offer it right off the bat.
What is the advantage of going to friction up front vs. index shifting?
What do you run on your current set up C.P?

McAskalot
The major advantage of friction up front is the unlimited adjustability vs the 3 static positions you get with index.
Here is a cool setup tip: If you are running a bash ring and 2 chainrings up from you can actually set your index ft shifter to have a "1/2" shift so while in your middle ring you can run all your gears in the back without any chain-rub.

Both twisters...
Hardtail - used to be indexed...now a singlespeed...
Heckler 5 - Friction Front.
Advantage - allows for fine adjustment of the frnt der to keep the chain quiet with some gear ratios.
24/27 gears but truly only something like 16 unique ratios.
Ever heard of CrossChaining? cross chaining is the practice of shifting into a gear combo like little chainring front(inside)/smallest cassette cog rear(outside). Chain travels a diagonal path - not a "closer to" straight path that a better selected gear ratio has. Well, a lot of folks that like to use gear combos like this with indexed frnt shifter experience a lot of chain rub noise against the front derailer. With an indexed front der, you are stuck with the noise...bummer... Solution: get a friction front der and slightly adjust frnt der till chain rub noise is gone... ;)
A lot more mtn bikers are "crosschaining" these days, with the removal of their largest chainring in exchange for a bashring. Nobody tells you this when you buy a bike, b/c it's hard to quantify the value of it... but good shifting practice includes using the gear ratios that also have good chainline...cross chaining wears out drivetrains and chains faster - and especially can lead to breaking of more chains. ::)
Okay - in the end the real reason nobody speaks about "poor shifting habits" and how to use the proper gear ratios etc - is b/c it's too much info for a lot of folks- many have the ignorant attitude of "who cares anyway, my bike still pedals and works in those gears"...and it oft leads me to say "then ride on and have fun" :P
So you still crave a little more info - google "Cross chaining"
November 14th, 2003, 01:48 PM
You are all so helpfull, thanks. It will be Sram friction left and triggers right. Staying with the 9 speed.
C.P." ...nobody speaks about "poor shifting habits" and how to use the proper gear ratios etc - ". Not true, come to my class, its a major concern of almost all new riders. I try to keep it simple. Look at the indicators on your shimano shifters, they are divided into 3 sections. If the red line is not in the same section on both then your doing somthing wrong.
-Now on to brakes-
I am looking at a set of Avid speed dial 7 brakes and levers. I like the color (bronze). Any concerns from the peanut gallery? Is it worth it to put a Archrival on the front only? Wheels are Mavic521 not ceramic.

Yo Bill,
Disk brakes are the only way to go with that hot new Palamino. If you like the feel of Avid levers, go with Avid mech. disks. They work so well and are set and forget.
But if you must go with rim brakes the Avid arch rivals are hard to beat. Use them on my hardtail Klein.

Bill,
I like the speed dial 7 levers on my Heckler...they function well. Bronze color is nice. You must be getting a "Palomino X" frame, as it appears that it's the only one that comes with V brake posts and IS disc tabs. If you have the means, I'd say go the extra mile and put some disc brakes on that bike. I've found that Avid mechanical discs paired with the speed dial 7 levers is a great setup.

I may have mentioned once or twice how much i liked the color of my Klein. In fact i like it so much that i seriously considered accepting the repaired rear triangle with paint to match just so i could keep the same color. The "Caribbean blue" two tone is no longer offered. In the end i decided it would be frivolous to reject the complete new frame just on that reason, and the new "great barrier reef" blue, see picture above, was not all that bad (even with the glitter.....shudder...).
The new frame is in.
It arrived yesterday and was still in the box when i stopped by Cycle Loft to check on progress and ask about compatibility of some components.
"Well open her up and lets see" says i
If Klein had replaced my rear triangle with whatever was available i would have been satisfied
If Klein had repaired my rear triangle and painted to match i would have been happy
If Klein had replaced the 2001 frame with a 2004 palomino in stock blue I would have rejoiced
As the frame came out of the box and the protective wrappings came off, i realized none of the above would come to pass.
Klein replaced my 2001 frame with a new Palomino, And painted it "Caribbean blue" to match.
I'm in ecstasy! Is that wrong?

Well that is testament to superior customer service, any new bike shoppers-take note of the level of service and warranty!
So it took a total of approx 20 days (Oct 31 to Yesterday)...very nice!
November 20th, 2003, 01:59 PM
Yes, 20 days is good.
Cycle Loft still has the same problem that created my less then favorable view. No one checked on the warrenty request until i went in there personally. I called after 5 days and was told they would call me if they got any reply. After another 8 days i went to the shop and was told the order went in over the internet and responces are usually received in 2 days. Then they checked and saw i needed to decide on new or repair. So if you subtract the 11+/- days CL sat on the responce then Klein did their part in 9 days with custom paint. sweeet.
The service at Cycle Loft has been excellent otherwise. I just don't like the fact that if you are not there, in person, checking on your own work order, then they don't pay any attention to it.They are 20+ miles from my house and not easilly on my way to work.
I will just haunt their shop till its done if that is what it takes. But i won't like it.

Todd,
come on down. They need the help.
To everyone else on this journey(as Todd put it), be sure you read and understand the signature statement at the bottom of my posts. Hang on now, this roller coaster is about to change direction.
That is not my frame.
feel that sick feeling in your stomach. breath, it will pass, relax and i will elaborate
I brought my old bike to the shop today. Finalized the spec for replacement parts. Got a firm date for Wed. so i'm excited for the post turkey ride. It's all coming together. I leave the shop and all is well.
Its Christmas bazaar time at the kids school and there is a spaghetti supper as well. So there i am sitting with my plate of pasta and my daughter notices my phone is blinking a message. I would normally not interrupt a family supper by answering a phone call but my wife was out shopping with a friend so i checked the message. It wasn't her, it was Cycle Loft.
'Bill, this is Len at Cycle Loft, I have some disappointing news. (keep breathing) We put that frame together and noticed then it was a medium. (nice and easy....in...out)You had an x large coming so this must be someone else's.(find a happy place) I'm really sorry, I don't know how we mixed that up. I checked at Klein and your frame is still at paint. We should get it next week but you wont have it for Friday. We have a demo you are welcome to use....yadayada.'
I hung up. I turn and look at Kiley(12) and she looks up at me and says. "whats wrong Pop?". "Nothing" i say "just the bike shop", but she is a keen observer when it comes to peoples feelings. She squeezes my hand and says "don't worry, it will be alright". I feel guilty for placing so much value and emotion on a thing. I love that girl.
I called an asked if the bike was still at paint if it was possible to paint it the same as the one i was shown, or if it was being painted that color. I guess theres no way to know.
I have said i would rejoice with a stock blue Palomino. I still will. I cant help feeling a little let down having seen a dream. Lets see what next week brings.

Usually takes a kid to set ya strate. I was mowing my lawn this summer, getting pissed off as the grass was 9" high. My daughter Sabina (6) came up to me and said, "Remember what you said dad, when something gets you mad, you walk away from it"
That really hit me like a ton of bricks. Usually you think stuff you say to your kids goes in one ear and out the other. The rest of the lawn went so smooth and easy. Nothing like a child to give you a reality slap.

Just make sure you find something with 2 wheels and join us on Friday. Take your kid's bike....or maybe take Evil's bike... it's just sitting around collecting dust. ;)
Splat has a chopper available too. ;D
Bill, just trying to make ya smile.
Hope you still can make Friday, buddy.

I have a 17" Marin Hardtail that you can ride Bill. I'd offer up the 2Step DH, but you are too tall for that one methinks. But I bet you'd be okay on the Marin if you needed a bike in a pinch.

P.S. I'm hoping the rain holds off for Friday.

Call from Len at Cycle Loft:
"bill, there apears to be some published evidence of unusuall abuse to your frame. Something to do with FLAMES?? A picture perhaps, printed in a local magazine, Singletracks i think it was. At any rate Klein is chalanging your warrenty claim. ......"
He was joking. The frame is in and being assembled. He called to check on a BB issue. It was to be ready yesterday evening and i was visiting at Mom's waiting but they called again to say they were having trouble still and it would not be ready and they would call me when it was.
I will stop by today to be sure.
Pics soon if its really mine.

Knuck,
I posted at 10 am and your bugging me for pics at 1:30. Let me at least finish the day at work. Not a whole day but i like to make it to lunch.
I stopped on the way home at Cycle Loft. Maybee next week ??? I have to accept some responsibility for the delay. The crank i picked hits the rear triangle and a special size BB will be needed. Stay tuned.
December 15th, 2003, 10:10 AM
The bike sits on the rack at Cycle Loft. The bottom bracket i wanted to use will not work with an E type derailer. None of the Raceface line will work un less you have a 68mm and mine is a 71. The Truvative Gigapipe is the right design but due to my choice of crank the bb needs to be bigger then 118mm or the clearance at the chainstay is insufficent. We wait now for an FSA which we hope will work. Its all a plot by shimano to force the use of thier product. The Maveric and Seven bottom brackets are 68mm and i could have my choice of bb and crank. I'm not complaining. The frame was free and the snow is flying.
These pics are for Knuck

Again i say. EEEWWWWwwwww
The old Adept had 2.75" and i never bottomed it out. I belive the Palomino has 4.5" which matches the front better which has 5". The shock is all air this year and not the air coil as advertised. I'll keep you posted on how that works out. I bet next year i could pick up an overstock coil/air cheap.

Yuck, that front fork dose not match at all! give it to CouchingTiger for a make over! Black & red??? ewww.. what a turn off.
December 22nd, 2003, 02:28 PM
Todd,
I thought you were my friend.
Here i am pouring out my tale of tradgety, hope, disapointment, faith and fullfilment. Opening myself to strangers and friends alike. Dont you relize the courage that takes. Now when all seemed bright along comes Todd and his little storm cloud.
"Yuck" says he,
"dose(?) not match" says he.
Give it to someone else to fix he sugests, as if my ability to design a solution could never be stylish enough.
This i might have expected from someone with whom i am unaquainted. But Todd, we have broken bread together.
You have hurt me, but i will recover. I'm good enough, I'm strong enough, and dog gone it, people like me.

Blue fork + Blue Flames=COOL!
December 23rd, 2003, 09:55 AM
I think blue flames are cool also. I only know that because i have seen them. The problem is, because i have seen it done, i can not do the same.
How about this.
Blue denim shock leg covers, embroidered with flames using copper wire thread, made by a NEMBA member(my Mom).
Evil? newbie? just keeping you guessing. Its all a ploy to garner attention. I'm a big show off you know. The plot runs deep and will be revealed in time.

YEAH BILL, ARE THOSE COPPER FORKS AND RIMS?
kNuCkLe
Let's start a GET BILL A FORK FUND
December 23rd, 2003, 01:46 PM
Yes Kevin, that is real copper.
The coating is guilded, glued to the aluminum, much like gold leaf is done. It was my first attempt and i learned much from the experiance. I plan to strip the old work off and re-guild with higher quality materials. Time will tell if the plan ever gets finished. I have done some reaserch on electroplating as well, i will post pictures if it all comes out good. I know how much you adore the bike pics.
Thank you for fund sugestion, but i must decline. I am satisfied with the front suspention i presently have. Perhaps some other forum member could benifit from your generosity, or better yet,
;D Go Fork Yourself ;D
How about this for a bash ring modification
knucklebuste
December 23rd, 2003, 01:54 PM
Jeesh, I thought I was seeing things at first. Then, I thought that was rust on the rims and fork. But then came to my senses and realized that aluminum doesn't rust ::)
How smart of me ha?
I'd electroplate the copper black bill. That'd look dope.

more porn for Knuck,
Avid Titainium w/bronze powder coat. It took me 5 web retailers and convincing a sales rep to go and look on the shelf to be sure they didnt have any. Turns out they did have one set but they were returned for a blem on the finish, which is on the blind side. So i bought them with a 70% discount. Bonus.

Always great to find a bargain.
Why do you like the bronze thing Bill?
Just looks cool or other reason?
December 24th, 2003, 10:26 AM
I dont know if it looks cool. But i like it.
I prefer the organic color palate for things i use in the woods. The pollished silver seems out of place. If i was to build a road bike i would probably go with the brightest chrome, Flouresent paint, wild spandex outfit, the works.
Mostly i like the attention. People could like it or hate it as long as they have some reaction i am satisfied. I like being dismissed as a novice rider at the trail head because i am wearing jeans, then suprise people with some new learned skill. I like being ignored at the bike park because i am old, then hitting the ramps as well as most of the kids. I like to make people wonder, "what was that guy thinking".
I like being me, so long as no one really understands who i am.
Sorry SloMo, short answer is,....other reason.

Z,
so nice to have you back. Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this little thread and for thinking enough of me to reply. I would have preferred praise to criticism but thats the risk i take exposing my inner self to the open forum. I will have to accept your sarcastic hypothetical question and try to turn it toward personal growth. I appreciate the value of your observation, you being highly educated and world traveled, certainly there must be contained in your 5 simple words a deeper wisdom. I will meditate on them, pouring over each syllable until enlightenment dawns on this unworthy mind.
Or until some shiny object diverts my attention.
bill ;)
