It finnally happened after 8 years of good service, a branch bent my 7 speed DEORE LX, I tried to fix it my self but broke the adjustment screw tab off, can I replace the part or should I just buy a new derailleur? Will a newer 8 or 9 speed work? Thanks

I presume you are talking about a rear derailuer, and Yes an 8/9 speed Will work fine for a 7 speed. I'v been doing it for some time. Hell I have a 9 speed LX on my Tandem and it is only a 6 speed in the rear and it has no problems

You assume correctly, it's the rear derailleur.

9 speed derailleurs will work on any set up....The shifter designates the position of the derailleur.
Set the limit screws accordingly and away you go....
