Are you talking about mixing gatorade and gu together in a water bottle, or just taking gatorade and gu out on the trail with you?
I have a can of Cytomax right now, it is better than gatorade by far but still not my favorite.
Gatorade will make me sick on a really hot day, so I only get it on really long road rides if I run out of water/drinks. Everyone tells me it is really scientifically made for sports, but to me it just seems way too sugary.
Cytomax tastes alright and mixes easily, seems to work a little better for me. For some reason I'm just not crazy about it. I guess probably cause the flavor I have really tastes like Dimetapp cold medicine.
Shaklee's performance drink tastes good and is really easy to drink. Small company, I just found it cause they were selling it at a race. Tastes like lemon-lime gatorade, but something about it makes it lighter & better IMO.
Endurox is good stuff... Probably my favorite for really long rides 5-6 hours, etc.. It tastes nasty if you were to just try it, but for some reason after a few hours of riding it tastes really good. (Not sweet at all, almost salty tasting?)
I never use Gu, maybe I would use it for mountain bike racing if the races were really long. I will generally just use a drink for quick energy and solid food (powerbar, etc..) for longer-term energy.

Never mix gatorade and gu. Your body cannot process that much simple carb at once. You'll burp it up. You'll get sick stomach. You will not absorb water properly. that is most important. I'm biased towards proper nutrition, and water loading days ahead of a race. Focus on the recovery part.
Energy drinks/food have minimum effect during 2 hr. race.
They do however, play a vital role in anything beyond 2 hrs.
Keep it simple take in only the smallest amount needed for the job. On bike nutrition, is only support, i'ts not what your runnin' on.
Cytomax rules.
Malted sport beverage in frosty mug for recovery.
