I've had to replace the "Shitmano loop" on my rear der every second or third ride lately. Its amazing how much resistance this little section of cable housing creates when it gets gunked up (which happens quickly in muddy/wet conditions).
I was digging through the parts bin last night and realized (doh!) that the old XTR rear der used to have an integrated rollamajig. Now I think I'm going to buy an Avid one to add to my current XTR der.
Anyone have any experience with these things - do they work?

Jisch,
I use them on my geared bikes and they work quite well. Just follow the set up instructions.
I beleive:
Middle ring
Lowest cog
Bottom of Roll-a-ma-Jig parrallel to ground when housing is correct length.

I have one on a couple of my bikes. it works very nice. and makes the cable line look a lot better and it makes it a little more difficult for a tree branch to snag the cable.

got it, love it, took 6" out of my cable loop. Have the guy at bikeman.com rummage around and get you one of the old school all alumininum ones. Anodized even and at half cost.

Yes, I have them on two bikes. For $10 you can't go wrong. Aluminum or plastic, they just make sense.

This stinks...
I called the only LBS around that I'll give my money to, I buy most stuff on line (convenience and price). They tech at the LBS said I should NOT put one on and just put on Avid Flack Jackets instead (they have Flack Jackets in stock and don't carry Rollamajigs). Now I know you could say he was steering me to what he has in stock. I trust this guy and in his opinion, the Rollamajig isn't worth having on the bike. I had flack jackets on my last bike and they do work nicely.
Anyway, I ride with these guys sometimes, I'll feel like a shmuck if I have a rollamajig on now. Ah whatever, JensonUSA, here I come...

Just another vote for the jig.
That RD loop always seemed to be a twig/branch magnet. By removing it shifting seems crisper.
I use them on all my bikes.
Do what makes ya happy!
Tom
ps. good stuff on yer mp3's 8)

Nice pic of the back of your Sinister Tom.
While we are on the topic of correct cable routing though, let's talk about that FUNKY s-bend thing you got goin' on with that Avid mechanical. What's up with that? Surely you can route that cable more directly; that s-bend looks like a LOT of extra friction. ;)

Hey John.... I LIKE FUNKY!!! (I've heard James Brown going full tilt in the NHB shop yanno 8))
Yeah, I sorta err'd on the long side to start and it's surprisingly smooth for an S bend (hey, everythings new I guess it helps).
I was going to shorten it but I'm not sure I like the cable exiting off from under the seatstay to the top of the caliper... seemed to be a catch point where my heal would hit it. How did Tim run his?
