Mountain biking in the Middlesex Fells allows the off-road cyclist the use of all Fire Roads. In addition to fire roads, there is a designated loop trail, which offers riders an easy to follow path around the Western Fells. This trail is marked by red and white mountain bike loop signs. This loop trail is about 85% on fire roads and 15% on single-track trail. The single track section of the Reservoir Trail is the only single track trail open to mountain bikers. All other single track trails are presently off-limits to bikers. Trail restrictions are based on the sensitivity of soil, slopes, wildlife habitat, and public safey concerns. Please stay off trails marked with "No Bicycle" signs.

Its taken from the Fells' official web site, http://www.state.ma.us/mdc/fells.htm
Its not some sort of typo, as its been up for years. If I read just that page, I would certainly think that the Orange Trail is open to bikes?

That statement is referring to the singletrack sections of the designated mountain bike loop. It does overlap with a bit of the orange trail. They are definitely not saying that the entire orange trail is open to bikes.

What you are saying is indeed the rules as far as I understand them, however that definitely does not sound like what they are saying there to me.

I hate to admit it, but I agree with Joe. They should simply omit the sentence about the "no bikes" signs. They lay out specifically what is open so as not to have to designate what isn't. It is a pretty restrictive place. Sorry dude. I know from your site that the place is near and dear to ya'.
