Well it's not really Winter, well actually it is. There's no fall, were right smack dab in the middle of sub 40 temperatures already, arent we; and it's not really a project unless it takes a week or more, and being the impatient prike I am this thing will be RTR by the end of the week. Oh yeah, I also have a romic coil on order. I just know I'm gonna blow this air shock. Looks like a piece of Junk to me, but what do I know, I'm an idiot right? Also got a Storm H.I.D helmet light, so when it starts getting dark at 1:45PM, I'll still be able to ride, rather than biatch all Winter about not being able to ride. This Winter, snow shoes for when the snow is 9' deep, and snow tires for the bike when the ability to ride arises. NO complaining and post whoring this winter folks. I'm psyched about this build. FINALLY a lightweight bike, well sub 35lbs (thats light for me) and a FRONT_DERAILLEUR complete with a Granny. MINT. Enjoy the porno. More to come

Knuck,
Two things:

1. THANK YOU for not getting CroMo cranks.
2. My DAWG came with that same shock (Fox Float AVA) and I had no trouble getting $325 for it on e-bay. So, if you want to defray some costs that might be an option. On the other hand that style of rear end may require an air shock for optimum performance, much like the Blur and Spiders. I'm just guessing here, I have no impericle data to support this feeling. ;)

Whats your experience with that shock? Will I blow it? I know nothing about air shocks. A dude over on Hcor put a romic on his and says it works mint, but I hear ya about the suspension design. I just don't know the correct thing to do here. If I blow the thing, I want to have a replacement as homey don't like to wait. Maybee I'll get a swinger air as a replacement? Any ideas gungi? Throw this kid a bone, would ya? Have you seen many AVA's blow out? I've heard of problems with them. I'm not gonna be doing 6' drops, but I do pound the shite on the trails. Knuck

No experience on either that frame or shock, but make sure you don't void the warranty by putting a coil on it. If I put a coil on my Racer-X the warranty is over.

I've been riding a Fox Float on my bike for about a year, no problems. No leaks, no blow out. I'm not a huckster, but I do catch air at every opportunity.

Knuck,
The AVA ramps up progressively like a Vanilla Coil. In the Fox catalog they have almost an identical curve on the chart. So, it is essentially the closest thing you can get to a true coil FEEL with an air shock. I have pedalled a few Blurs around with that shock but, none in the woods. It does feel nice. I took it off the DAWG frame 5 minutes after I took it out of the box so, I don't know what it felt like on a 4-bar rear end. I have not seen any blow out and most everyone seems to love them. Mind you that 'most everyone' who has them tend to be XC riders. But, that is what you intend to do with that rig, right? I agree with Jisch that it should be fine for trail riding and jumps but, probably not drops over 3feet.
How about a progressive 5th Element?
What does Iron Horse say about replacement shocks?
What do they recommend?
I would definately discuss your options with them and take any and all advise they may offer. ;)

Hope this helps.

Is the shock a 2003 or a 2004 Fox Float AVA with propedal?

I agree with Gungy - call Iron Horse and see what they recommend in terms of a coil over option for this frame.

Where'd you find those cranks Knuckles?? I've never heard of that company.

All in all sounds like you'll have a very sweet rig on your hands there and one that you can pedal all day long as well.

Be sure to post pictures of it fully built up.

Well, it doesn't say propedal on it, so I'm assuming it's a 2003.
As for the coil over, I'm waiting on response to that question. It was supposed to have a 03 5th element Air on it, but progressive doesn't have them ready yet for that bike. I was told I can swap the fox when the 5th comes available. The cranks are from a company in CA called AC racing or www.adventurecomponents.com (http://www.adventurecomponents.com)
According to the owner, they manafacture their own components. The cranks were $140 with CNC ramped rings. I actually was sad to ditch the 44T large ring, awaiting the MRP LRP system which will be replaced by a EVIL DRS when the 4/104 comes available again, as it looks like it belongs in the Smithsonian Institute. Anyhow, they seem as good as any other crank out there. I prefer to deal with smaller companies, as I find you get less of a hassle with customer service and whatnot. Also I believe in supporting the smaller guys too, hence the reason I was looking at In-sync suspension forks. They looked like a decent fork and a little different design than the norm. However when I learned that they make forks for Wal-Fart bikes, I strayed away, and it's back to Marz again for a fork. I was going to go with another Shiver SC, but decided to go with the 04 Marathon S 120mm fork. It's nice, real nice. CNC adjuster knobs for rebound and compression, spring fork with an actual air cartridge that you can put air in (I think, don't quote me on that) but a nice aggressive XC type fork. More shite arrives this week and the build continues. The X.0 SRAM triggers should be fun to get use to (using your thumb to up and downshift) ::)
We'll see, more pics to come.
