I just bought this Surley Karate Monkey 29" on ebay which I'm building out as a SS.
Intended configuration for critique:
White Bros CX1 fork
XT 36h disc hubs laced with DT Comp spokes to Salsa Delgado rims ALL BLACK
Lightest cheapest hydraulics I can find, maybe Shimano XT close-outs.
(was going Avid mechs but this bike will see snow and i'm afraid those babies will freeze up.)
Drive: Shimano LX Hollow Tech pushing a raceface 32T, sram pc-1, and a DX 20T to start.
(11% multiplier of 29"vs 26" that's equal to a 32-18 on a 26", jeeze I might have to go to a 22!)
Thompson 110 x 5deg stem and Azonic 710mm 1.5" riser bars
Easton carbon post, Terry Zero saddle
Frog pedals

Now all I have to do is learn to ride the sucker!

OK Fattie, here is my $.02. I'd consider a stiffer crank. Being that this thing is a SS you will be honking on the pedals pretty hard at times. I put some of those hollow tech LX cranks on a friends bike for him & I wasnt impressed. I would avoid using them just for the low quality bolts that they come with.

Other than that I think it's going to be a way cool bike. Have you considered riding it fully rigid?

Should be cool! I'd go fully rigid with it.

I hear your concern on the mechanical disks. Stay away from Maguras what ever you do. Hayes are likely the best/cheapest bet. Empty-beer.com (mtbr.com) marketplace has them cheap quite frequently.

Good input on the cranks. Damn, those are the one thing I HAVE!
What would you put on that's stiff cheap and light?
And yeah I may ride it rigid but I got such a deal on the CX1 I HAD to snap it up, normally a $700 fork I believe.

Did you check your blur's shock link for cracks?

My .02¢ is about the cranks too.

Get some 5-bolt compact cranks and run a 30t ring up front. That way you won't have to run those huge cogs in back. You'll probably end up with a 16t-18t in back which are much more commonly available. And, although pricey (~$100) check out the new White Industries freewheel, it is sweet.

I agree with Couch. GO RIGID!!

What's the problem running a 20t on back?
I already found one, $5.

And can you tell me where can you find 30 teeth rings?
I looked EVERYWHERE yesterday, jenson, bikeman, pricepoint, webcyclery, you name it I seached it!

Fatty, I'm sorry I didn't clarify. You can only get a 30t ring for 5-bolt compact BCD. Not 4-bolt. Not 5-bolt Standard BCD. Only 5-bolt compact BCD. ;)

Now Todd, the doctor warned you to take your anti-cynical medication DAILY.
Obviously your slipping again!

Maybe we can find some training wheels for you if you really wanted to get one! ;)

i'm building up a singlespeed and have done a bit of research in cranks, but i have a 26'' bmx bike, so it has a bmx bb instead of the euro(threaded) ones. i'm running profile racing cranks on mine. you can get them for euro bb as well. they're nice and stiff according to the people i know that ride them. i'm runnning a 30 tooth bmx sprocket up front for mine. a profile imperial ring. profile racing also makes spiders to attached multiple rings to. they have them for 3ring and 1 ring setups, and on these you can get chainrings. i'm pretty sure 30 tooth is one of te ones they're offering. check out profileracing.com for more info. they cranks are qiute a bit heavier then normal cranks, but they're stiff and for me (240lbs) that a small price to pay for a sweeter ride. if you're one of those scrawny xc race types, then it would probably be overkill. but if not, i would highly recommend looking into them. check out danscomp.com for online pricing or your local shop can order them up nice and probably make a few other reccomendations. if you want, you can get a titanium splindle for it to lighten it up a bit.
