During yesterday's ride my rear derailleur decided to stop working. I looked at it and the cable was frayed right where it attaches. I set it up so I could ride with 3 speeds and figured I could replace the cable when I got home. I took the front shifter cover off (Deore) and I don't see an easy way to get the cable end out of the shifter. Does the whole assembly "pop" out with a small screwdriver? Neither Shimano's or Park's sites seem to help. Anyone have any experience? ???

Yeah Steve, there is a little screw on the inside end (middle of bike side) of the shifter, remove this and shift gears I think until you are in the lowest gear, then feed the cable back out through the opening vacated by the screw. There should be a little metal bead on the end of the cable as it comes out.
Hope this helps!

Here is the link to Shimano's service instructions (PDF format)

Thanks. My buddy and I figured it out last night. Now that I've learned how to replace the cable, I can find the info on Shimano's document. It would be nice for them to have a cable replacement section, preferably with an exploding diagram of the shifter. ::)
