I have another thought! The IMBA epic ride is in the white mountains the following weekend - Sept 6/7. I'm definitely going!
Are you wedded to labor day weekend? Because it would be awesome to do the epic and make a weekend out of it. There will be camping and stuff, and it sounds like a good time.
Anyway, I'll get more details and post them soon, if you're interested.

Sadly, I am. This damn thing called work is fouling up all of my plans. >:(

Looks like the preferred day will be Saturday August 30th. Morning ride followed by lunch and beverages. ;D
I'm staying about 45 minutes away at my parents house, but there are tons of hotels / motels / condos in N Conway, and multiple campgrounds along the Kanc as well.
There's lots of good riding in this area. Hopefully we can hook up with some of the White Mtn NEMBA folks.

Z,
How long is this IMBA Epic ride and do you think an intermediate rider like me could hang on these rides?

Mark I have ridden with you and you could definetly hang on! You will have a blast...
Steve, yah Saturday works for Jean and myself. We will probably just make a day trip of it because the camping thing will be insane that weekend! I will get back to you and we can post a meeting place and Time.
Hey Z, unfortunatley OB and I have a chapter activityconflict this coming weekend but maybe we will see you for IMB epic I will hope to be there for that.

Hi Mark,
Since I am not organizing the epic ride and I haven't been on one before, I don't know for sure what level riders usually go on them. But this particular route is not a death march. (The original one they were planning WAS going to be a death march, so I am glad they changed it!)
The ride is only 16 miles, although it is demanding. It would be a nice challenging ride for an intermediate, but I think there would be no problem with you hanging on.
Besides, if we all go, then they'll have to wait for us, right? ;)
PS - I suspect there will be a longer option for those that want more! It is easy to link in more stuff at the end.

Harry, Here's what I propose for August 30th:
Start at the Albany covered bridge off of the Kanc, and ride the lower Nanomocomuck, and continue onto the middle and upper sections as far as we feel up to. I have ridden the lower from the covered bridge to Rocky Gorge, but not the middle or upper. After that we'll need your knowledge.
If one / some of the N Conway locals join us, we could instead let them treat us to some of the "secret" stuff in the area. ;D

That sounds great Steve, I will look at our map and talk to OB about it and get back to you but that sounds, like... excellent! ;D Hopefully we will get some other takers.

Saturday August 30th, 9-10ish. Are you going to join us Z?
How did your ride Aug 2nd go?
The 8/2 ride was great. Whitehorse ledge and the singletrack near Echo Lake was excellent. 8)

Any maps available (possibly on line) of Whitehorse and Echo Lake area?

Nothing that I know of online. But, the White Mountains waterproof map and the Rob Brook mtb maps show the "major" trails in the area. If you are in the Echo Lake area, you don't have to look to hard to find the singletrack. It goes in both directions away from the lake. To get to the top of Whitehorse, find the Red Ridge trail. (It's a tough climb, but worth it once you are on top) Try Pm'ing the White Mtns locals or inquire via the Red Jersey and maybe you can hook up with someone who knows the trails. ;)
Disclaimer: I ain't no expert on this area, just going by my memory of riding there once. ;D

Steve, where did you want to meet?
If we ride the Nan, the easiest place to meet is the parking lot at the Albany covered Bridge off of the Kanc. (A parking pass is required). The trail starts just across the bridge, and starting here will allow more of a (not all) downhill ride on the return. How far away are you from there? Is a 9:30 start to early / late?

9:30 am works for us. When you say albany bridge is that the bridge at the beginning of bear notch road? We are about 2 hours so in Nashua. Where are you coming from ?

It's about half way to Bear Notch road from the ranger station by rte 16. There's a sign for the "Covered Bridge Campground" and there's a big parking lot there. It's on the right (north) side, and is pretty easy to find.
Where are you coming from ?
Stoneham, Maine. Just under an hour away. We could start a little later if you want, I wasn't sure how far away you were coming from.

It's not looking good for me... :(
My better half just found out he has an exam in Boston that morning, so if we do go up it won't be until later in the day.
Have a good ride!

Meeting at 9:30 is fine with us. That will give us a nice early start. And Yeah I remember where that covered bridge campground is. Looking forward to it. I was up with some friends and climbed Washington Saturday. Gorgeous day!
Hey anyone else thinking of coming? Give us a heads up so we can plan on seeing you.

Quote from HTSteve: "Any plans on swimming in the river, or lunch afterwards?"
Swiming in the river would be nice, it is suppose to be hot. As far as lunch, we could bring a trail snack and get something after or pack something to eat back at the cars after. We are easy!

After riding for 2-3-4 hours, a swim might be mandatory to be allowed into the local eating establishments. ;)

Wow, have I been sleeping! Unfortunately I will be away this weekend and won't be able to join you guys. If you wait two weeks there will be some new bridges in place over the worst of the mud holes on the middle Nan. Just remember the mud so you can appreciate the work next time. :D
I really need to stop in here more often...

Mark:
It's has to be about a 4 1/2 hour drive. Probably a bit far for a day trip. Maybe the IMBA Epic would be a better choice as you can camp and make a whole weekend out of it.

Where are you coming from Mark? Central CT if I remember right. If so then then as much as we would love to ride with you again Steve is probably right on at about 4-4.5 hours 1 way! That would likley take some of the fun out of it, maybe if you come up with a friend on friday and stay the night before in NorthConway or Lincoln. Otherwise the epic probably would be a better choice.
You Know Jean and I have been kicking around the idea of a fall camping biking trip. maybe late October. Any interest?

How about this:

Ride Great Brook Sunday, and somewhere else nearby Saturday. There should be some camping areas within an hour's drive of this event.

We would love to we only have about 1/2 hour ride to NEMBA fest ...we had a great time last year, but we have a family reunion we have committed to out of state that weekend. We would both rather attend nembfest to be completely honest! :(
