View Full Version : Fork Pump...and more?

A flat tire last night was immediately compounded by a broken CO2 inflator (not to mention the mosquitos). 40 minutes of walking later, a roadie came to the rescue. Anyway, I have decided to go back to a mini-pump, but was wondering if one could use a fork pump, fitted with a shraeder to presta adaptor, to do the trick. Has anyone tried this or heard of it being done?

Sure you can use a fork pump for your tires however I think it may take a few thousand strokes to get any reasonable amount of pressure in there. :P
The volume of air that goes into a fork is much less that what goes into a tire.

That's true, but a mini pump can't hold that much more air than a fork pump, no?

I think that the chamber on the mini pump holds a lot more air than the fork pump. I will do an actual comparison and see what happens........ yea yea I know I need a life.

Don't feel bad, this is valuable research! Perhaps NEMBA will post the findings online.

OK here is the deal. I just tried to inflate a 2.3" tire with my Fox shock pump. I put in 300 strokes of the pump and got less than 5 PSI (the needle hardly registered). Bottom line buy a mini pump.

:o AA - I am concerned about your well being.
Tmorash - next time load the tire with leaves, brush, or whatever and ride to the nearest exit. I've never done this but have witnessed it done with no Rim damage....

I thought about trying that, but after weighing my confidence in that solution, the distance I needed to go (approx. 5 miles), and the number of mosquito bites I had received, I thought that my best bet was to head to the nearest road and walk until a roadie went by. With the unexpectedly nice weather, I figured that it wouldn't be too long before I ran into another cyclist. The funny thing is that before the flat, I encountered no fewer than 6 cyclists. Post flat, I encountered 1 (who thankfully had a pump).
