Check out the Angry Asian. Click on the fork maintenence icon at the top of the page then choose the year and model. It's not the actual manual but he has lots of info on that model that's printable.

The 98 SL's were pretty darn simple. The guts were the same as the XC if I recall and they still used the cartridges vs. an open damping system (changed in 99 I think). What do you need to know?

Nice! What parts are you having trouble with? The dummy leg can be confusing as it has a delrin spacer block thingy that is sort of weird. You should also have a white cap thingy on the top of either push rod (which the spring sits on). Lemme know if you need help.

Yep, that looks correct. I don't think that the 1998 models used oil, but it may have been that 1998 was the 1st year they did. The older ones just used grease (through 1997 I know did).
If you want to put a little oil in each leg (just for lube) along with gobs of grease on the seals, the fork will work better and last longer between rebuilds. If the fork wasn't designed for oil though it may weep a little on the bottom around the bolts. I ran it in mine and didn't have big problems though.
