It's been a few years since I've ridden them and can't quite
remember what the surface is like. Would I be better on a
mountain bike equipped with knobby or street tires? Thanks.

We were up there a couple of years ago, and the carraige roads had a gritty stone dust like surface. You certainty don't need big lug knobbys, but there are lots of hills and the street tires might not give you enough grip on the downhills.
Have a good time! It is so beautiful up there.

Yeah, that sounds about like what I remember. I remember
being able to ride a road bike (with skinny tires) around
Eagle Lake (they made it so that was feasable). I think
I'll bring the GT Pantera with knobbies. I really don't like
to ride on the paved roads up there (too crowded) so will
probably spend most of my riding time on the Carraige roads
with one obligatory trip up Cadillac. thanks for your response.
