Due to the state budget cuts a majority of State Parks and State Forests lost funding in order to fund the higher use parks. Cockaponset SF - Pattaconk area was one of these that sufferred the cut. They removed all dumpsters and bathroom facilities. Luckily they didn't lock the gates! But who knows how long that will last. Over the weekend a couple of us rode there and were disgusted with what we saw. The parking lot and area near the beach were litterred with garbage from the busy 4th of July weekend. Some were kind enough to put their picnic leftovers into garbage bags. Luckily the Park supervisor has staff that comes by during the week to clean up. He had also stopped by to see for himself and left us with a nice garbage bag so we can clean up some of the loose trash!
All I want to say is to any of you that ride there, next time you go, bring a large trash bag and try and pick some of the stuff up. There was a lot and I am sure as the hot days continue this won't be the last of it. Obviously if you can take it out with you when you leave that would be great, if not you can leave it by the road and someone from the DEP will pick it up during the week.
It will benefit us all if we help keep these parks clean. It is much easier to close off a park then to pay staff to maintain it.
