Anyone care to join in comment? I realize I am delving into some pretty serious topical matter here. This could get contentious, so participate if you dare.
The latest high court decisions could potentially affect all of our lives... or not. Like the gay sex ban being lifted. Here is something that does not affect me personally but I could not be more in agreement with. What two consenting adults do in their bedroom should absolutely be protected by the constitution. And if it leads to gay marriage, big deal. Nobody can disagree with this decision and consider themselves a fair American.
Speaking of fair, that's where the Court went wrong with their affirmative action decision. It is a sad day that diversity is considered to be more important than meritorious achievement. Minorities are competing in disadvantaged playing field? This is their argument and it just doesn't fly. Because they may not be as good in math or English? Hey, maybe the NBA ought to start applying affirmative action to whites, since when it comes to basketball, they are at a disadvantage versus their more athletic dark skinned peers.
Let's say you needed major heart or brain surgury. You find out that your doctor is a 40 year old African American. Would you be confident knowing that every possibility exists that he may have made it into both undergrad and medical school, and maybe even got his job thanks to affirmative action? I know I would be very skeptical wondering if someone more qualified should be in this guy's place. The same would go for any partular career; e.g. lawyers, firemen, et.al.
It's not about skin color folks. It's about merit and people's lives suffering the consequences of a flawed form of reparations.
