Hey CT folks (especially you west of Hartford folks), I drive by a trail head on Rt44 almost every day now on my way to my new apartment in Avon. The trailhead sits near the W. Hartford/Avon border and there are always about 6 to 12 vehicles parked there.

Is this just an alternate trailhead into the West Hartford Reservoir, or is it a trailhead to a separate trail system?

The reason I ask is that it is pretty close to my apartment and I was thinking I could hit that trailhead to get in some early morning pre-work rides this season.

Any info would be welcome!

Thanks in advance!

If you ride from Rt. 44 and follow the dikes to left (sort of southeast?) you will hit the enter the woods near the eastern fence line of the Resevior. It is a pretty serious climb followed by some awesome fast and technical downhill sections. It's my favorite section over there. Rt 44 is a great place to start when you are alone, but if you are riding with a group parking can sometimes be a problem.

In case you're bored and need to collect some more minutia, technically the parking area on rte.44 and the compensation dikes are own with the state and managed by DEP. As you enter the woods as described by Phresh is where the property transitions to MDC.

That's always been my beef with starting there. PARKING!
