View Full Version : Trail Damage Guilt

It was certainly great to FINALLY have a nice weekend day to ride. Went to Foxboro SF this morning and was not surprised at how wet and muddy the trails were. Between the loads of MB'ers and dirtbikers, there was some definite trail damage happening. I feel bad and kind of hypocritical, having taken a position in the past against riding when the conditions are poor, but after all of the rain over the past month plus, could we really be expected to stay away any longer? As bad as Foxboro is, I know Wompatuck is yet twice as bad. Other than the Cape, there probably wasn't any place dry to ride. And, I'm sorry, but I avoid the Cape during the summer at all costs. Traffic is horrendous.

Just trying to purge myself of the guilt. :-\

From the glass-is-half-full department, I was at Foxboro Saturday and I was surprised to find it LESS beat up than I had expected. Lots of trails looked perfectly normal and had drained well. The ones that tend to be muddy were, in fact, quite muddy. And there were some deeper ruts than usual. All in all, though, it's a well-managed park in decent shape.

FWIW, I'm not sure if we didn't do just as much damage knocking topsoil loose in dry weather last year as rutting the trails this year. You have to ride some time.

One very positive thing that I found out Sunday when we met a motor-x'er resting up a bit. There was supposed to be an Enduro race at Foxboro a couple of weeks ago, or last week, or something, but to the organizers' credit, they chose to cancel it so as not to do major trail damage with the trails already roughed up from the snow and rain this year. Major kudos to those people for making a decision that no doubt pissed off a lot of folks who travel long distances to participate.

I would'nt feel to guilty, we are all out there wearing the trails down. Making them just a bit wider as we ride, going around that obstacle when no one is looking. That's OK, that's what happens with trails, can't get around that. We are guilty if we don't take time to help both economically (join and donate to Nemba, Imba ect, Mass Parks) and physically (get involved with trail maintenence and trail building) Saving the trails and access to the trails is going to take a lot more than good intentioned politically correct rhetoric...my .02...Bob

Is there any decent riding in Foxboro? Last time I went I found it extremely boring. It's all big fire roads. Are there any decent drops or single track in there ? I figure maybee I'm missing something as I've heard so much about the place. Knuck

Foxboro rules. There is a ton of single track. I don't do drops so I don't look for them, but there's miles o' riding. Come over and play. I'll show you around. I live <5 miles away.

That was NOT six inches of mud I was churning through yesterday. I swear, it was just surface water.
