Hopefully this doesn't come off as too much of a shameless plug... :-[
The band I play bass and sing in, Version Larry, is playing our final gig with our original drummer on Friday June 13th at Mixers in South Windsor, CT.
Its a three band thing - three bucks to get in - can't beat that.
We're playing with The Clams - never heard them before, and Ninth Wave - awesome surf rock band. We go on around 10:00. Introduce yourself - I'll buy you a beer.
You can check out MP3s of Version Larry at:

Honestly - wasn't our best performance, but that happens sometimes... It was our last with our "old" drummer - know any drummers looking for a band?
The bass I'm playing on all the pics on the web is a Carvin 5 string. What kind do you play?
I'm now playing a bass I built (except the neck). The neck, pickups and electronics I bought from Carvin.
You can see pictures of my bass building adventure at:

Here's a pic of the finished bass...

I play a really old Epiphone. It sounds ok, but my amp (Epiphone) is really limited.
I'm sure you guys sounded great. I'm gonna do some gigs w/ my dad and his drummer friend this fall up here in VT. Any tips on performing? It'll be my first time playing for an audience (besides school jazz band, which I quit) I've only been playing for about 5 months and i'm kinda nervous. :-\
What kind of strings do you play?

Hmm not sure I'm qualified to give advice about performing... but hey this is the internet, I can give advice about ANYTHING... ;D
- The most important thing is to have fun. If you are having fun, the audience will recognize it.
- If you make a mistake - keep on playing, unless its a doozy, no one will notice it except you.
- Do a sound check before you start playing if you can, and have someone in front tell you how it sounds. What you hear and what they hear is very different.
- This one's kinda up to you, but on stage is probably the one time in life where I really just let go. Whatever the music makes me feel like doing I do. Sometimes that's a pogo, sometimes a spin, sometimes I'll just lay on the floor. I don't worry about what it looks like, what people think etc. I figure I'm there not to make music but to entertain. Much different than my "day job". Folks who see me in both kinda can't believe it.
I don't really have a preferred set of stings, this new bass is a 35 1/4" scale and the strings go through the body, so I have to get extra long scale strings. I just got a boatload of Peavey Cirrus strings because I got them at $5 per set. I think I've got Labella strings on there now.

Is the black pickup lookin' thing that's closest to the neck a pickup or a thumb rest?
I know, you're probably getting sick of my questions. I've just never known a bassist that rides.
How wide is the neck at the nut?

Hmmm I don't remember. I think its 1.75" (total guess??)
Its got a single coil pickup at the neck and a dual coil at the bridge. I installed a switch so I can turn off one of the coils in the back. I love it.
Two things I talk about ad nauseum, biking and bassing.

Primus42, I didn't know you were playing fat strings, how cool!
Maybe you guys can hook up with Rob M and the Bondville Boys some time. So what is the name of your group up there in the VT on old equipment, the Luddites? Hehe ;D I crack myself up!
See you at the Turkey Burner?
Listening to your tunes now Jisch, very nice! Way cool to build your own rig!
Play on gentlemen!

Thanks man. We're on the search for a drummer now, if you know anyone in CT looking.
