Excelent footage for sure, it gives you a good idea of the track layout and the size of the jumps and berms. I'll be there on the 25th

I've never raced BMX so this is totally foriegn to me. .. From watching the video, I have a couple of observations...

1) Keep the rear wheel on the track. That guy doing wheelies all the way through is obviously picking up speed from the bumps rather than losing speed.

2) Keep the front wheel up. Todd's fall when he gets run over looks painful. From what I can see its from letting his front wheel drop.

3) I don't know why but the guys in front seem to be rocking their bikes back and forth as they pedal - seems really inefficient, but it seems to be working...

I'm going to try and make the 6/25 race. We'll see. It looks pretty intense.

Looks like a blast!

Is there a special class for beginner whimps like me whose wheels have never touched a BMX course before?

How many laps?

How many laps before I get lapped? :)

I'd never been on a BMX track either before last week. Yes, most of the comments are correct. The hard part, as is always the case, isn't knowing what to do, it's making that happen.

The kid in the video that was wiping everyone's a$$ is a pro BMXer. He was manualing through the rhythm sections and gapping the jumps like they were nothing and making it all look EZ. The rest of us were mainly old hacks ;)

As in any race, you are always faster on the ground than in the air. Keeping the rear end on the ground through the rhythms, doubles and triples and on the gas is the fastest unless you can gap them all. The problem for me was that, well, I suck and couldn't slam through the bumps in a manual or on a wheelie and I certainly didn't have the skill to gap some of those big-boys.

I have an entirely new respect for BMXers. I though that it was all about strength before last week. Now I know it's all about technique.

Z, only one lap, two minutes of pedaling your butt off. There was a girl on a 26" bike (flame helmet) I hear here may be more next time. The rules and categories were pretty laxed and informal which was good.....wait perhaps you and I could discuss this more over a romantic citronella candlelit dinner, roast pig, baked beans and Bud. I can impress you with my crash stories and how I came in last.

I just bought a better full face helmet since landing on my head seems to be my specialty. Thanks for the riding tips guys! Keep the front tire up.. Hummm.. I'll try to remember that! That little double thing was the hardest part of the track, I didn't like slowing down before it, and could'nt get enuf speed to clear it.

Todd:

I didn't mean to point out the obvious. I'm sure you weren't trying to drop your front tire... ;)

It looks very tough to me.

Were there many riders on full suspension bikes or mainly hardtails?

most everyone was on hardtails. You can still do it w/ a FS bike, if it has a lock out I'd use it.
