View Full Version : Todd - caught in the act!

June 3rd, 2003, 12:05 PM
This is from the "other" New England Mt. Bike Forum. This is a post from Todd@MT.A actually evangelizing Santa Cruz. I got it from an unamed but reliable source.

"This years SantaCruz Chameleon has been beefed up in the rear triangle and the $500. dollar price tag is nice,"

To be fair though:

1. it IS good advice (a versatile HT for $500)
2. he isn't praising the FS (this would be akin to me saying I have a Cannondale R1000(road bike) and you jumping to the conclusion that I endorse the Jekyl and Gemini)

Also, I'd like to add that a certain Connecticut bike shop in say the North Haven area is going to be carrying the chariots that so many of you lust after verrry soon!

Yeah, Yeah... So What! Not only did I recommend a SC, but I might even buy a polished Chameleon frame for myself and rip the decals off! >:(

It is funny to see the loyalties that people have to the various brands that they ride. Yes it is true that I have a SC but I also have 2 cannondales, a Jamis & and an IF. To be honest I could care less what the stickers on the bikes say I just want them to fit well and work for me. One of the reasons I was drawn to the SC superlight was the simplicity of the design. I looked at the new Blur this year and determined that it isnt the bike for me without even riding it. Why? Because in my opinion it has a lot of moving parts to wear out. The key word is OPINION. Another good example of this is I have always had an aversion to Kona's (sorry Gungy) for the simple reason they look a bit odd to me. Is this logical? No. I could be missing out on the best bikes in the world because I'm hung up on a stupid thing.

Remember kids next year the hot bike could be a (insert bike brand here) so dont poo poo a brand for no reason. Who knows maybee I'll buy a Kona someday.

OK group hug.............

Can somebody tell me what the hell his point is?

AA
June 3rd, 2003, 01:56 PM
My point is we are all too concerned with what brand of bikes we ride, as opposed to just enjoying the riding.

June 3rd, 2003, 02:20 PM
My intent was to bust Todd's nuggets.

I don't care about brand of bike's. Nor am I such a good rider that I could tell the difference between two similiar rides. However, I do know the type of riding I do, what is comfortable, and in my own opinion what works for me.

Interestly enough, I give consideration to buying a bike that my favorite shop carries and lets me demo. Nothing worse than buying from some arrogant hammerhead shop that won't let you take it out of the parking lot.

Let us love one another.

Todd - don't be so caustic. AA will potatoe punch you into the ground after you chase each other around the BMX track.

I have now decided to become "brand loyal". I will be riding my Jamis At Rye on Wed night so any non- Jamis riding people will be unmercifully T-boned in the corners.

NOO, I'm not quite sure what a potatoe punch is........

NOO, I'm not quite sure what a potatoe punch is........

1. Hold out your right hand with your palm facing down.
2. Make a fist
3. Turn your wrist a 1/4 turn to your right (your thumb should be over the fist facing up).
4. Either bend at the elbow or use your shoulder and pound the Todd into the sand by hitting him a top his head.

This can only be done when there is a large height differential.

To be honest I could care less what the stickers on the bikes say . . .

Knuckle's HT is a Gack with Kona stickers on it. So, I guess for some people it is ALL about the stickers.

It's not a gack man. Can you read the head tube and the down tube? KONA man, KONA. Kona is the best bike out there. Forget all the rest, Kona is the best. If you buy a Kona, you will be a better rider. You should know that Grungypunk. You too Slosomejoe, you'll be trading in that tit - us in no time as when you realize the Kona will make you a better rider and it's all about the bike, not the rider. Repeat after me, "It's all about the bike, not the rider."

I hate to have to remind you idiots, but I feel I have to before you all start hating me. So here it goes. It's a joke. Aight? Joke. But the bike is no joke. It's now a Kona. Ok. Nowhere on that bike does it say Gack. Ok. Kona. Right? Good. I was only joking about the SC and all that jazz too. Hey folks, besides my Gack.... ahem.... Kona, and a select few, most of all the bikes are made overseas. There are probalby 3 major welding facilities in Japan or whatever and that's where all the frames are made. Like it or not. So your SC, may have been welded by the same nut that welded my Kona. Ok, so it makes no sense to diss a particular bike. It's all about stickers man. STICKAS. Stickers. Stickers. Stickers. I am not biased against any particular bike. I've had C-dales, Specialized. Gack.... ahem... Kona. They are all good. Some have **** welds sometimes. I've been lucky so far, but bikes in 03 are light years better than bikes in 98. They are bikes. They all have the same components for the most part, and they are all made by one of the 3 big manafacturers overseas. They are all good. Some suited better for some than others. I can't wait for my 04 Big Hit. I'm frickn droolin. I've got a lil budget set aside for a killa DH in the fall. Based on the success of the current Big Hit. I'm goin with Specialized. Although the frame design is completely different in 04 and might have problems. Spec. stands behind their ****, so I'm going with them. I've also contemplated V10's as well. That's right folks. SC. We'll have to see what my patience level is like at the time. But as of today. I'm getting a 04 Big Hit. Ok. Done. knuck

Not to change the subject from this Knuckle Konaworshipping, but Jenson is selling a frame that I'm told is a Chameleon for $249. Last week it was called "Chameleon Green" on their web site, but that's been changed recently.

A guy on MTBR states that it's made by the same people that make them for SC, same geometry, same tubing, same welders. Do you guys know anything about this? Good deal (ugly color).

Check it out at http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.asp?number=18207 and http://forums13.consumerreview.com/crforum?viewall@28.kiVDa4aaA5f.7@.efb1360

Knuckle will you be doing some heavy sticker peeling if you get a big hit or a V10? LOL I have a nice blasting booth we can get everything off any frame you buy and add Kona stickers.

Well you see, when I buy the Specialized, that will be my best bike. So all the Kona's might have to convert. One can never tell what the future will hold. My bikes will succumb to the name changes if they know what's good for them. Like I said, it's not about the bike, nor the rider. It's all about the stickers. Right? Right. knuck

Radair,

I think those frames are produced by Kinesis - who also produces many Santa Cruz frames. Looks like a killer deal to me. I saw a post on MTBR or somewhere (maybe Ridemonkey.com) of the new 2004 Chameleon Frame-set that has a more normal way to mount the rear disc brake....so perhaps this is why Jenson USA was able to get their hands on the frames they have badged with their logos on them.

If you are into that green color (which I think looks pretty cool - but hey I'm Irish so I'm biased towards green) than it seems like a killer deal for a bike that could be run as an single speed, a gearie, an urban rig, or more of a hardtail trail bike set up. Seems like a frame like that would be well suited for Lynn Woods, the 'Nam and hell even the Rye skatepark.

Knuckles - if you are referring to that new Big Hit that's been talked about at NSMB.com and MTBR.com and other sites.....it may be hard as hell to actually get one as I think it's going to be more of a Pro-level offering. I may be wrong, but I don't think all Big Hits will utilize that new frame design for 2004 (and that frame design looks a helluva lot like they borrowed some looks from the likes of Nicolai and Balfa if you ask me).

So many amazing bikes and frame sets out there these days, so little time and so little money. >:(

the 04 big hit is sick. They changed the frame so it could incorporate a full length seat tube. The 03 big hits are nice too. So are the 02's. Specialized is making a good bike these days. on my first stumpy frame, it said that they weren't just made in taiwan, they were HAND MADE in taiwan, and designed on Sun Microsystems computers (had the logo and everything). That frame kinda broke and they gave me an 03 for free which is wicked nice.
