I am considering giving BMX a shot on the mountain bike. It's been almost 20 years since my last BMX race so this could be interesting. Looking at the picture there appears to be a rather large double jump, is there an "easy line" to the left of that big double?

Also what kind of equipment is required (helmets, pads on the bike etc)

clysdale
May 28th, 2003, 05:06 PM
yes, that huge double is the pro line......yikes!.....only requirment is at least one 26inch wheel (for you people with 24'rears) helmet and thats all!!!!

pads on the bike are not required......

May 28th, 2003, 06:07 PM
pads on the bike are not required......

I just dusted off my California Lite Pads and UNI seat cover...

I will try this at least once.

Big Game -

Wasn't this something you and Gungy had interest in?

You can also ride this track on non race days...

Let me know as this is not to far from the NOO residence...I have ridden inside at Rye but have yet to drag my 32 yr old A$$ out on the dirt track...

im convinced that endurance, not bmx experience or rye experience is going to be the biggest factor (damit) as the track is pretty long. Im going to try and test it out soon but with all the rain i havnt been able to hit it yet....

Your highness -

Please elaborate. I am under the guise the it is a one lap race (given the track is all down hill). If that is the cause, then perhaps sprinting ability, the holeshot, etc. would be the deciding factor. To me endurance relates the longer races. For instance, I have no endurace, which is why on lap two of an XC race I bonk. I no longer race. I use my new child as an excuse as well as my undisciplined training routine (e.g. Mellow training Rides followed by beer). That is why I also contribute nothing on a road ride other than drafting in the back of the pack. I'm a real treat.

I'm not sure I have what it takes in the 4 -cross but will give it a shot. But first, I seek your wisdom Sir Clyde!

NOO (not the guy who got stuck on Mt. A ;D)

Holy Crap that looks fun as hell!

I would love to ride that course but I'd be just rolling over those jumps at this stage in my limited riding ability.

Hell, I'd like to get up there sometime just to see the likes of NOO, AA, Todd and other do battle on that course!

If any CT members are up for a road trip to ride this course or see these races let me know!

Fo' Shizzle my Nizzle!
This sounds VERY interesting.
I would definately be up to going up and racing at least once this summer.
How about a NEMBA Forum race???
I will probably be leaving my 30 yr old ass out on the dirt track!

I'm afraid you would be dissappointed in NOO. Although with all my recent weight gain I might get some good momentum.

If I picked the wrong line and ended up heading at those doubles...I would do what my newborn son does most of the day...SH*T MY KNICKERS!

I like Gungy's idea of NEMBA Forum Race. I think Couch and PK would be in assuming there was no breathalizer at check in ;)

If you guys want to make it down to race sometime i'll set up a forum race for you guys!!!! thats worth the price of admission for the humor factor itself!!!

NOO, as for your question about endurance...this track is on a downhill grade but requires basically a constant sprint the entire time....even rolling and pumping the jumps is going to be a chore...i wouldnt be surprised to see most of the passing in the last 200 feet......when the guy first out of the gate is asking for a twinke and a backrub (which todd will be onhand giving out to all the cute sweaty riders).

MMcG

I bet the concept of a Forum Members race could be turned into a fundraiser for the 'Nam!

I'd get my arse kicked if I actually raced, but I'd pay to see guys like Couch, PK, JT (hell he's a former BMXer) Big Game, Gungy, NOO, AA, Todd, IAB and whoever the hell else was game to get in on the action. I'm sure the Sinister guys would get in on the action, maybe Narlus, Old Man, maybe Radair, the list could go on and on and on.

Hell we could have a women's grouping too with the likes of Z, FisherCat, OldBroad, Mountain Biker Chick, etc. etc!

That would be a helluva fun event!

Oh my gosh that double looks scary! Does the "pro-line" mean that anyone can do it in any heat, or is it only an active loop in the pro-motos?

I hate things like that in race courses as the during the heat of the race and flowing adrenaline, I'm likely to go for it and die ;)

Is there a pix/diagram of the entire course? I'd really like to give it a shot. AA, you in?

I'm game, I would like to get to the course a few times for practice prior to racing but if that isnt possible I'll just show up and race.

clysdale
June 2nd, 2003, 09:14 AM
good question, let me see if i can find some pics of the whole course overview.....as for the practice yes...there is a half hour of practice before the racing starts for you to find the good lines or die trying....all entries will get at least 2 races so everyone come out and give it a try....now that dawsons creek is done there's nothing else to do with your wed now is there :o

If you are in, I'm in. What the heck, what's the worst thing that could happen, although the last time I was riding on a track I broke my collar bone.

I wonder what a good SS gear ratio would be? i think that I'd ride the geared bike this time anyhow.

-Couch

Mt.A TODD
June 2nd, 2003, 10:05 AM
I too would like to know a good SS gear for the dirt track! I'm thinking 44/18 or 32/12?... I don't know I guess I'll have to try it out with gears first.

AA
June 2nd, 2003, 10:09 AM
regarding gearing, back in my BMX days 44/16 for 20" was standard gearing. I have no idea how many gear inches that is but I would assume the same number would work for 26" wheels. Anyone know how to calc gear inches I cant remeber how you do it

CouchingTiger
June 2nd, 2003, 10:16 AM
I would think that a 44/16 would be high for a 26" wheel. I would think that a 40/18 or so might do the trick.

-Couch

gungywump
June 2nd, 2003, 10:26 AM
I'm a little foggy this morning but, I think it's:
FrontRing/BackCog*WheelSize

So a 44/16*20 is a 55inch gear.

And a 34/16*26 is a 55.25inch gear.

I could be wrong. Like I said I'm a little foggy this morning.

AA
June 2nd, 2003, 01:01 PM
Gungy,

Even in your fog you are correct

http://www.panix.com/~jbarrm/cycal/cycal.30f.html

So if I want my single speed to be geared like my old BMX I will need to swap out my 32/18 for a 32/15. What I havent taken into account is that my legs are 19 years older since I last raced BMX

CouchingTiger
June 2nd, 2003, 02:14 PM
At the risk of having to back out later and look like even more of a puss than I already do, it looks like AA and I are gonna give it a go.

Should be an absolute hoot, if I survive that is ;)

I would really like to try this. But, seeing how my back is still on the mend from disc-surgery it probably wouldn't be wise for me to try it until at least the July or August events. You guys have to let me know how it is. I would likely do it SS style to satiate the Old School in me, or is that vintage?

I ment to say "MOW MY GRASS." you see I just started a new lawn 3 weeks ago, and today was my first day to mow it with my brand new lawn mower from Sears. At work all I could think about was racing home to cut that fresh thick lawn. Last years Birthday present from my parents was 14yards of loam dumped in my front yard....anyway AA- "mow my grass" ha ha..

damn.. I'm even gonna dig out the goggles!

I have no idea what this track is like. Riding the Jekyll.

I saw the forcast too. Who knows what will happen there though. I'd think as long as it's just misty/light rain it would be OK.

I would like to see the following heat or moto: AA, Couch, Clydesdale, and Todd.

Todd - I hope you chalk one up for us little guys!

It was a pretty good time. It really is amazing how hard you're working in that little 1/4mile sprint. It's also a mind scramble dealing with the jumps ever 15 feet. The hardest thing though was the darn starting gate. I can track stand for quite a while at a stop light and my balance is pretty good on a bike, but I couldn't sit on the gate with both feet clipped in to save my life ;)

It was fun. We got a bunch of pix which I will sort through ASAP. I just couldn't get by AA all night. We literally finished within feet of eachother all night, but the result was always the same, him being in front by a wheel, or a bike length. Must be his previous BMX experience.

Lots of fun for sure. I would have to say that the track is really difficult compared with the tracks I raced on a million years ago. You can’t ride 30 ft without there being a big table top or a set of triple jumps appearing in front of you. I was definitely gassed at the end of each run. We did 5 races and I did about 5 practice laps & I was pretty tired. I am planning to go again next month, perhaps a practice session in between.

Cool stuff. How close do you guys live to Rye? We need something like that down here in CT (hmmm..an entrepreneurial venture perhaps..although it would have to be an indoor outdoor facility).

What was the preferred type of bike to haul arse on last night? A Hardtail?

Rye was a bit of a hike from the suburbs of MA. It took us about an hour twenty to get there.

I'll be there again next time.
