I'm looking for some advice on a first mt bike purchase. I've been doing a lot of research online at the manufacturers websites but as the options increase it's harder to make a decision on what bike would be right for me.
I'm an older guy (just turned 50) and I'd like to just get out in the woods and ride. Not likely to compete or race downhill.
Am i better off getting a HT to learn skills on first. Or go directly to a FS for added comfort and stability ?
I read the responses to the intermediate riders query and wonder if the same applies to a beginner.
I've considered a Kona NUNU or Jamis Duango HT. Or a Kona Kahuna, Jamis DAKAR or Specialized Rockhopper FS. Thanks for any help. :-

If you can afford it, go for a FS. I'm almost 40, the extra cushion is worth it for comfort.

I'm in my sixties, and although I don't even think of doing what the younger guys do,I enjoy getting out and riding. To me, there's nothing like F/S. Easy on the old body, and helps to make up for that bad line you choose once in awhile.

Are you ready for some age discrimination? Here are my$.02...

If you were a twenty something just getting into the sport looking to achieve mt biking god status, I would say HT for at least 2 years, without a doubt. Then go for a big travel fs.

However, since that is not the case, I agree with all above on the FS. It will shorten the learning curve and be more enjoyable to ride. You won't have the luxury of comparison to a ht though, so you will have to take our word for it that the fs will be easier on the body.

I recommend an xc-fs as apposed to an all mountain/fr/dh type bike. This type of bike is lighter and most often cheaper (unless you go with some of the super bikes out there like the blur or brain). 3-4inches should be sufficient and there are tons of bikes out there to choose from. Check out the Balfa Belair, Jamis Drakar, Santa Cruz Superlight, and as many others as you can before you make a decision. You will be amazed at how differently the different pivot technologies ride.

Enjoy the search! - JT

PS - No matter what you get, invest in a good comfortable set of knee and shin pads!

JT,
Thanks for the suggestion about the pads. The old bones need protection.
I'd also like to say that the most important thing when buying a bike is FIT..in my opinion. gaa, make sure that the dealer spends time making sure the bike, whichever brand,is fitted to you. It'll make a huge difference.

I been reading about the Santa Cruz Bullit and Heckler and been reading nothing but good things. Same with some of the Specialized models. I think some of it comes down to what fits you best and the price of course. Good luck.
