Hello, I am writing from Switzerland. I will soon be moving to the United States, and was wondering if you have bicycle insurance policies.
Here in switzerland we are required to have a mandatory liability insurance policy which covers damage up to 100,000CHF, and costs about 3 dollars.
Do you have anything similar in America?
thanks

I don't think that kind of insurance exists in the US. We have similar coverage in our auto insurance, but that doesn't cover bikes. I suspect that homeowners/renters insurance would provide coverage if you caused an injury or property damage while cycling.

There is insurance for racing I believe. A friend of mine was talking about getting it. I'll have to ask him for some more info. but as for just regular biking... medical and life insurace?

Agreed, we don't have anything like that here (yet). Basically if you were at fault in a bicycle accident and hurt an uninsured person I don't know what would happen. I'd guess that they would go after (sue) you directly.
We have insurance plans for all motor-vehicles however, so bicycle and pedestrian and maybe even just a blanket plan can't be far off. Man, I hate insurance. I've never once had a claim in my life.

You may not like to pay for insurance, but when accidents happen it is a nice thing. Last year I forgot my bike was on my roofrack and drove into my garage, breaking the frame in four pieces. My wife immediately called our insurance co to see if anything could be done. The bike was covered as were any upgrades that I made to it. I got a nice Santa Cruz Superlight with the settlement.
