Maybe this topic has come up in the past but I am too lazy to sift through 10 pages of posts so...
Yes, my rear Avid mechanical brakes squeak. I have cleaned the rotor. Not sure where to go from here. Suggestions?

Oh Crap, that's the wrong one! V brakes!
Check out IfRiders link below, that's the one I was thinking about.
Yes the rubbing alcohol works good. As a general practice every time I lube my chain, rotors get a quick wipe down.

On mbtr, there's all kinds of suggestions to bake or burn the pads. If setting fire to your bike doesn't work, there was another suggestion - ebc gold pads. I ordered some for my deore discs from cambria and while not completely silent, a big improvement.

Keep it simple. You cleaned rotor - clean the pads too. They are easily removed from the caliper.
I use denatured alcohol on both, and have had good results. Oh, and use a new clean rag to do this. Since I did it, no major noise from the discs since I did it back in late Feb...(avid discs). - also - keep your paw prints off those braking surfaces.

I had a set of Avids that were squeaking not when I applied the brakes, but when I was just riding along. Turned out the clip that holds the pads in was bent and was hitting the disc causing a squeak.
Ditto on the EBC pads - much longer life too.

Todd,
Have you been dropping acid or something? That's one spaced out avatar you have going now!

I sometimes use Simple Green to clean my bike, and I've found that If any gets on the rotors... it really makes the brakes squeal.
(Like mentioned before) a quick wipe down with rubbing alcohol solves the problem.

I had a squealing rear Avid last fall and e-mailed a tech at Avid. This thing was f-ing loud. The reply was to clean the rotors with soap (mild detergent) and water. He indicated that alcohol tends to glaze over the pads surface after awhile. You can sand / file off a little of the pads surface and the squealing goes away. YMMV.

Hey Dude don't use acid on your rotors, way too harsh!..rubbing alcohol man.
Actually I was saving the Avatar for the nuclear bomb attack in Iraq - that didn't happen, shucks maybe next time. My brother-in-law is coming back from Iraq via Delta any day now. He is a Ranger in the 75th and was at the rescue of POW Jessica Lynch- that's some cool Shiite! I can't wait to hear his war stories first hand! I did hear that digging up the body parts by bare hand was brutal- hope he's not emotionally f'd up like me.
On a positive note: Squealing brakes during hunting season is a good thing!

Best method by far is to simply boil the pads in a pan of water for 15 minutes. Cleans them good! Gets out all the oil and impurities that can contaminate them.

At first I thought it was the bouncing that was mesmerizing me but I now realize it's the hair waving like the tail of a dog...a very happy dog! ;D
