You can always preride on race day. Just be extremely respectful to racers.
It's really rocky and techincal. The Downhills are nothing major, but still long and fast; just not very steep. The climbs are similar. Definitely more of a "mountain bike race" then Farmington.

I've always used my hard, but I plan on taking my FS this year (now that I have one). It's definitely rocks, so a fs would probably be a reasonable idea.

The course as of Saturday was in pretty good condition. I will be helping to mark the couse this weekend. All I can say is that this place is a lot of fun to ride - technical rock gardens, loose rock beds, short, but steep climbs, etc.
This is one of those places where the worse the weather, the more fun the ride! The soil is a mix of sand, mud, and a little bit of dirt so make sure your drive train is well lubed.
You can pre-ride the course, but do so early. Also, I attached a topo map of the trails used for the race last year (most of which will be part of the race this year).
