I'm looking for a set of platforms for general XC and some light FR. I was considering the Ringle ZU ZU's or Shimano DX30's. I thought there were some previous posts but I couldn't find 'em.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I kinda lie the wellgo/weyless MG-1, nice size, sealed, light magnesium, ss pins $45 @ supergo...or the sun ringle Octane, good price at Pricepoint, they also carry the mag version of the octane @ $45 (really good price) but they are out of stock on the mag right now) Also carried by cambriabike but more expensive, may be they will price match it for you ..also the mg-1 has a fair amount of preload and seal drag so they don't spin much if your foot comes off...Bob These two i recommend mostly cause you say xc and mild freeride..there are a lot of heavier duty pedals out there

I've got the Ringle's ZuZu and a set of Octane. Both are fine though the Octane are beefier. Both can be had cheap mailordert (pricepoint.com or jensonusa.com). I also got a set of the Azonic Mg. They are WICKED light (magnesium bodies) and cheap (I got them for $27) though the bearing are not as good.

if price is no object, go w/ the atom labs air corp. i've tried some friend's and they are great - ultra grippy, very low profile (this is nice as it makes a lot more stable).

but, i've used a whole bunch:

generic GT
primo tenderizers
ringle zu zus
shimano DX
wellgo b-27 (tioga copy)
wellgo b-37 (azonic a frame copy)

for the $, i think that the wellgos are the way to go. i like both the b-27 and b-37 lot. they have sealed bearings, and were really cheap when performance was blwoing them out (on the order of 20-25 dollars - a lot cheaper than most).

the ringles i've had good luck w/ too, but i've seen plenty of broken pedal bodies from others. the shimanos are good too, not quite as much grip (even w/ teh longer set screws) than the others but they are nice and light, and the build quality is superb.

this is what i've got currently on my bikes, if it helps you decide:

joker - shimano dx
schwinn (trials bike) - shimano
Giant DH - b27
evil imperial - b37

spares (zu zus)

hope this helps.

I like zu zu's just wear shin guards! I just put a hole in my shin that went down to the bone.

I prefer the GT's with the replaceable pins. Just watch your shins because they will remove some serious flesh.

great place to look for platform pedals is http://danscomp.com/ , they have a bunch of bmx stuff. personally i really like my sealed haro big blocks. had an old unsealed set too that it took me a while put a bend in the axle. snafu had a weak axle. oddyssey are a decent cheopo pedal. have tried primo and they are nice too. azonic makes a set of amgnesium pedals that are suppose to be really nice (added bonus of bright sparks if scraped on rocks) that are reasonably priced. brooklyn machine works makes a pedal called the "shinburger" that danscomp lists as just "bmw sealed pedals", these are a do or serious mess your leg pedal. super grippy but if you do manage to slip or miss the pedal, you better pray you're wearing shinguards. the atomic ballistic pedals, i've heard stories of people crushing the bushings/bearings.

persaonally i highly reccomend the haro bigblocks. nice pedal and nice value. i'm 240 lbs and have yet to bend the new set (i did bend an old set a bit after 2 years on my bmx freestyle bike). if i had the money, i would put them on all my bikes (kinda expensive if you have several bike you ride alot). i'm gonna get another set for my new komodo as soon as i get the money. the priomos were grippy but no testing as far as axle strength. also keep in mind that i'm no weight weenie by far as far as my bike parts. i just want stuff that performs and lasts. for a lighter weight, i'd reccomend magnesium pedals (azonic ones or previously mention sun ones).

i believe there was also a post about pedals in the trials section of this forum.

Atomic Aircorps hands down...

Thick bodied pedals tend to roll easily (roll out from under your foot), thinner bodied pedals resist the urge to roll and offer a more sure-footed surface.

well of course they are the best. I wish I could afford them. I just slipped my zuzu's again today, put several huge gashes in my leg. WEAR SHINGUARDS!!!

I would check out Eastern Bikes flat pedals at your LBS. For about $30 you can get a very nice, light pedal that sticks to your shoe and offers replaceable pins. For a little more $ you can get sealed bearings too.

I've have tried ZuZus, AtomLab Aircorps, and Wellgo MG1s. The ZuZus are a basic cheapie, but work well. The MG1s are cheap too, very light, and very low profile, but are prone to corrosion where the finish chips off. I got the Aircorps as my "last" set of platforms after trying the others, and because they claim to have the lowest profile. Turns out the profile is no lower than the MG1s, but the Aircorps are nicely finished and durable.
