View Full Version : Bring on the Football Season

I really hate to be a bummer but the Sox pitching looks completely Sucky after pedro this year. The hitting looks pretty good but, I can not hold out much hope for this season.
Bring on the Pats!!!!!!

Dude, I am optomistic about the Sox this year! I think the offense is looking good, and our starting pitching is better than most teams in the A.L. We need Derek Lowe to keep it together and Casey Fossum to live up to expectations.
Yankee fans need not respond. 8)

??? Wow, talk about pessimism. I don't know how long you've been following baseball, but you ought to know that spring training doesn't mean jack. Pitchers test out new pitches, arm angles, release points, etc. They're really not pitching with any particular strategy. Derek Lowe will be fine. Wakefield is pitching the best of his career, now having more than just a knuckler. Burkett should be good for 10-12 wins. And I believe Fossum will come around. He has a great curveball. He just needs better command and spring training is often when that segment of pitching is the last to come around.
This is going to be a more fun team to watch this year. Manny is more relaxed. Millar adds great chemistry to the clubhouse. You are right in that they will score runs. And if Hillenbrand keeps up his torrid spring, they should be able to get something pretty good in trade. But don't expect it to be a frontline pitcher. They need good, young arms to reinforce their farm system.
I believe the biggest worries will be the bullpen and infield defense. That said, and barring any major, long-term injuries, I like them for at least 96 wins this year... edging out the fading, elderly Yankees. Now there is a pitching staff to worry about.

No offense intended there Baboon, but Fossum? Our greatest hope with him is that he wears out all the opposing hitting during preseason!!!....... I just cant see it but if he turns it around I will Humbly apologise to you on this very string............If by all star break he has more wins than losses and not injured and still in the starting rotation. Then I will apologise and bow to your greater baseball knowledge.
In addition if his era is below 5.00 on top of all that I will write a haiku to your baseball brilliance!!!!!

March 19th, 2003, 10:23 AM
Lots of young players, especially pitchers, struggle at first. We'll have to see what Fossum can do. The Sox did not get Bartolo Colon (a bona fide #1 starter) because they refused to part with Fossum, so they must think very highly of him. If Fossum ends up sucking, that will be a big #1 strike against Theo.
I agree with the Cheeseman. We're looking at 95-100 wins. 8)

While I am aware that preseason is just excersise...
I have been following these guys since ....well lets put it this way. I remeber and went to games with my Dad during the 67 season. I have been excited then completly sickend by their last three series appearances. And as I said before, the hitting will be there as will the fielding but two pitchers wont' beat the freakin Yankme's.
There thats all I am trying to say.

March 19th, 2003, 10:38 AM
Let's touch on the Yankees, then, for a minute. Clemens... 41 years old. Enough said. Pettite... good for two to three stints on the DL. Weaver... can't handle the Big Apple pressure cooker. Contrearas... big question mark, especially after a less than impressive spring. Good bullpen, but Rivera also injury prone the last couple of years. Torre overuses him bigtime.
And let us never forget the Steinbrenner factor. It is starting to look like the Yankees of the 80s when Georgie was WAY too involved, being directly responsible for sending the team into the tank. You've seen the grumblings in the news from some of the players. This team is definitely on the downslide. They'll still be tough, but not tough enough. They don't even make the playoffs this year, losing the wildcard to the White Sox. George proceeds to flip his wig and fires everybody. And it will be SO fun to behold.

Why not 95-100 wins? We won 93 last season, and we are now better and healthier than we were a year ago. Last year, Pedro and Nomar were both coming off injuries, Manny missed a month, and Jason Veritek was coming off elbow surgery. Just dumping Daubach and Tony Clark made us a better team. :D
March 19th, 2003, 11:33 AM
Phenomenol topic gentlemen. We should have PK start a Red Sox "Make my Summer; Ruin My Fall" forum addition.
Kidding aside, I agree with Cheesedonger and IAB that we will see a good number of wins.
Interesting to see what happens with Shea. Millar played 3rd base the other day, coincidence? Talk of Shea at first if he stays. All good.
As Lowe said himself...they are still wearing the Red Jerseys. Way too early to comment on pitching. Fossum has great support...we'll wait and see.

Good question. We don't have one. :P
My Sox tickets arrived in the mail last week. WOO HOO! I only go to a few games a year, but you've got to order early to avoid sitting in the bleachers or the right field corner. A few seasons ago, I went to five games, and Pedro pitched four of them. Talk about getting lucky. 8)

So let's stir in a little contraversy...
ML Baseball sucks! The players are a bunch of prissy, overpaid, arogant asses and last years "near" strike is a testament to that. They lost me in '94. Did you know that Pedro gets paid approximately $7500 a pitch! WTF is that all about. Seats at Fenway start at around $60, a fenway frank is $5 (for a freakin hotdog!), parking is $20 at least.
Bottom line is the bottom line. Baseball has lost it's mystique, it is ALL about money from the players perspectives, from the owners perspectives and the saps like us have to foot the bill. It is just not fun any more. Sure a great story emerges every now and then but for the most part baseball seems to overlook the one most important element, the fans. When they decided to forget about the guys like you IAB who buy a few seats a year, they lost more then just a few fans, they lost the meaning of baseball...

That is really a tired argument, jollytime. The game of baseball is played with as much fervor today as it was 20 or 30 years ago. Blame the owners for the state of the game's finances, not the players. How can you possibly blame anyone for making as much money as they can? You would do the same in their shoes. Pedro Martinez may be a rich man, but he plays with as much heart and passion as anybody I have ever seen.

Cheese,
You know the argument is really tired and that is why so many people, myself included, have walked away from the game.
I don't blame anyone for wanting to increase their earnings, but at some point the system will fail. A union laboror makes a certain wage because of the work they do, as does a baseball player. In both cases the owner makes of the company makes a profit, generally more then the worker due to the risks involved in owning a business, expenses, etc. If the one company bids on a job and his employees cost twice as much as another, he will generally not win the job. What I am saying is that baseball has outpriced the fans. It is cost prohibative to go to a game, buy a jersey, etc. The system is failing. So who is to blame?
Well in a simple world of supply and demand, the demand for baseball is down, the supply cost is up so guess what, there has to be a cost reduction. I don't care who is to blame, baseball has forgotten that it is the fans that make it great and without little kids in the stands watching Pedro pitch that passionate game because their parents can't afford it, it is just a matter of time until the demand slips further and baseball comes tumbling down.
I hope it doesn't happen, and I will continue to keep track of the game out of the corner of my eye, but it will take alot to re-convert this tired fan!

A few thoughts on where to find fun baseball on the relatively cheap.
1. T-Ball! Helluva lotta fun!
2. College ball - Go Huskies!
3. Summer League Ball - Thread City Tides!
4. Minor League Ball - Norwich Navigators....oh wait, crap, the Stankees pulled out of Norwich - Bastards! Has another team come in to place a minor league club there?
Cheers,

quote from Jollytime 3/19/03I don't blame anyone for wanting to increase their earnings, but at some point the system will fail.
Actually I have been thinking about this same thing recently.
And I think the system has begun to fail, just look at Minnesota and Montreal and the Florida Marlins.
This would indicate to me that the cost to sit at the table is getting too high for some now.
Mr_Cheeze
March 19th, 2003, 07:54 PM
I think it is a completely disingenuous argument to claim that one has become discontented with the game of baseball because "the system is failing." That is just total crap! Blame it on cable TV and the internet, on the fact that there are just so many more forms of entertainment these days and baseball just doesn't hold people's attention as much anymore. Viewership and attendance is down in pro basketball and hockey as well. Same deal. Too many games and too high ticket prices. I don't go to games but I do follow all of the teams pretty closely. The game of baseball hasn't changed one iota. Same rules, same strategies, same demand on high skill levels to hit a baseball being thrown at you at over 90 mph. It's really rather easy to ignore all of the other stuff and just enjoy the game for what it is. When someone tells me that they have become soured because of players unions and agents and owners, that just tells me that they were never really a big fan in the first place.
Besides, we all know that you'll be back on the bandwagon the day they clinch a postseason berth.
nhiker
March 20th, 2003, 10:05 AM
:o "disingenuous" ouch!!!!!! I think we have hit a nerve here.
No I don't think the level of play has fallen off. On the other hand I would say that the players are over paid...I am not even sure how the most ardent fan can argue this. And the facts show that salaries are killing the small market teams. But I digress because none of this is my issue with the Red Sox. Personnaly I have suffered with them from 66-86. I was the freaking Red Sox Fan. after losing in 67', I was sick but I was young so I bounced back, after loosing in 75' I was suicidal for a little while but eventually recovered. However after 86' .........it took me a week of the lowest torments of hell and suffering and remorse to get over that game six f##king choke. And when I came out the other side, I said this monkey has to get off of my back...So I have discovered emotional detatchment. I follow them now but they do not get my love anymore. I just can't stand the pain :'(. And I have seen them in the post season since.....and they don't get to hurt me anymore!!!!! >:( So yes if this means I am not a real fan anymore!
I can live with that.
So Cheeze God Bless You and know that if you ever get tired of suffering there is help available for you to. "RSA" Red Sox Anonymous....Is it for you?
Mr_Cheeze
March 20th, 2003, 02:17 PM
Of course they are overpaid when compared to real jobs. The pro athlete is merely an entertainer. That Ben Affleck can demand 20 million a film makes me want to puke, especially since he is a god-awful actor. But, again, entertainment. Pedro Martinez and Mike Piazza, entertainers. Michael Jordan, Shaq O'Neil... entertainers. Tiger Woods... entertainer. Overpaid for what they do; i.e. make money for the networks that carry them and the advertisers that endorse their products through them? No. Overpaid when you consider many towns cannot even afford to carry full contingents of underpaid firemen, yes. But so isn't Arnold Schwartzenagger. Such is our culture, my friends.
So the next time you shell out $9.00 to go and see the next big blockbuster and help pad the pockets of some actor or actress and get only 2 hours of entertainment to boot, consider the amount of entertainment that you get from your favorite, overpaid ballplayers for a fraction of the sum you pay yearly for cable or satellite tv. Sports on tv is the much better bargain. And if you balk at watching the Sox because Nomar wants a contract extension or he is going to walk, then you should just shut off your TV altogether and forget about the movies because the whole entertainment industry, including professional sports is laden with vast sea of prima donnas. At some point you have to just let it go and enjoy it for what it is.
And suffer I will, because I cannot ever give up the Sox. That they keep me hanging every year gets to be frustrating, yes, but it's like a continual cliff hanger with them. I so look forward to spring training every year. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Besides, we all know that you'll be back on the bandwagon the day they clinch a postseason berth.
Cheeze,
This is where your logic fails you! I grew up a Yankees fan. In '94 I stopped watching baseball and if memory serves me correctly the Yanks have won a few series since then. You know what, I have not watched one! You bet if the Sox go to the series I would watch it, as I would with the Cubbies. As I said every now and then there still is a great story, but I am not a fair weather fan just waiting for my team to "rise up" out of a "curse" cause the team I once called "mine" has no such thing.
Let me ask you a question, if you go to a business and are insulted by the staff and owner do you go back? That is what I feel baseball has done to the fans, insulted them. I have not gone back. Go ahead and love it. That is great for you and for your sake I hope the sox do well this year. I bet the seats on top of the monster are awesome. Just don't invite me to watch a game cause I'll probably be out riding my bike!

All the overpaid athletes, the bitching between players and owners, the disgruntled umpires, the high ticket prices, and the labor battles does not take away from my love of the game of baseball. One does not have to enjoy all the politics of the game to enjoy the game itself. And the fact is, MLB sports the best players in the world. There is nothing quite like going to Fenway and watching Pedro strike out 18 or seeing Manny launch one over Yawkey Way.

Lest you all think the Yankess are having it easier these days, they just completed a waiver-wire deal yeaterday where they shipped Benitez to Seattle for Jeff Nelson, who is having just a god-awful season. What are THEY thinking?
The next month is uber-huge for the Sox, with Seattle, Oakland and the Yanks on the docket. Whatever you do, don't blink.
Pats/Giants tonight. Whoopie. Don't get me wrong, I look forward to football season, but it's hard to get revved up for a pre-season game. I'll leave that to the get-a-life football junkies.

Jeff Nelson getting shipped to New York was clearly "punishment" for his spouting his mouth off about the lack of trading Seattle did at the trade deadline. Although, getting sent to the Spankees is hardly punishment for any player. I am bummed that Benetiz got traded because he was regularly blowing leads.
After having the Sox lose four of six to Baltimore and Texas on the road, I am very afraid of what the next month might bring. This modest three game win streak does have me happy for the moment, however. As bad as that road trip was, it was the offense that sucked. The bullpen held up ok, which is very encouraging.
Mr_Cheeze
August 7th, 2003, 03:26 PM
Nelson is sporting over a 12.00 ERA with runners in scoring position and over 18.00 with 2 outs. Not exactly a clutch guy these days. I think I would prefer Benitez.
Don't you think that Steinbrenner is steaming from the fact the Theo pretty much committed highway robbery during the trade-fest? That whole thing with Pittsburg where they essensially got two good releivers for a small AAA infielder... all because they were spooked by a failed Lyons MRI.
Lyons will be a good pitcher. I was more than happy to get him back in the deal. This team is not only set for this year but also next with most key players under contract through next season.
The big debate next year will be, do they sign both NomaHHH and Pedro and Derek Lowe to the big contracts they will all demand? One of the big two will be gone in 2005. My money is on Pedro.

Painful to be a sports fan isn't it?
Why put yourself thru it year after year?
Try not paying any attention to sports until the final playoffs. Then you might see a good ballgame, and have saved yourself countless hours of your life.
Just a thought. ;)

OK IRB and Cheeze-man they made the playoff's and seem a shoe in for at least 95 w's this season with 94w's in hand and 3 games to go as they prepare for a 3 game set to close out the season against the Tampa Dee's ;D but Due to fossum (the starting pitcher tonite in tampa having and ERA of 5.47 "SO NO HAIKU FOR YOU!" UNLESS he throughs a 9 inning shut out and that would drop his ERA to 4.92 :D
What do you say guys Fossum been playing Possum?

I thnk Fossum needs to shut it down and just get ready for next season. We CAN NOT include him on our post-sesaon roster! Are we just THRILLED now that we passed on Bartolo Colon? ::) Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose.
Yeah, I think 95, maybe 96 wins this year. I am sure most of the regular starters will see limited playing time in Tampa, but they will get some at bats to keep them fresh. Pedro will probably pitch only two or three innings over the weekend. I do think the Sox should try their damdest to win the last three games, because you don't need to go into the post-season having just been swept by Tampa Bay.

Yeah I would agree lets not skid into the playoffs. The pitching really has come around, if they only can stay hot! ::)
Oh crud, I feel an emotional hangover coming on.

I really hate to be a bummer but the Sox pitching looks completely Sucky after pedro this year. The hitting looks pretty good but, I can not hold out much hope for this season.
Bring on the Pats!!!!!!
OK The power of negative thinking continues! ;D
I feel a hangover coming on. :-[

Glad the negative thinking vibe works for Red Sox fans. It didn't help at all for my Phillies. Then again, not much can help sh*t pitching.

No sports fans anywhere are more negative than in Philly. They're not happy unless they are booing someone. They would boo the Pope.
