Merrimack Valley NEMBA
We
had a small but highly motivated turnout on Saturday June
the 5th for National Trails Day. This was also our 2nd
trail event for Merrimack Valley for 2005. These guys
were amazing. We basically got everything done that we
wanted to accomplish. I was expecting a small turnout
because of all the trail events on the NEMBA calendar,
so we carefully choose an appropriate project. We cut
a new spur trail off of last year's Americorps singletrack
trail. This new section of trail looks great.
We also did a pretty good job of burying some of last
year's singletrack sections that crossed back and forth
over the washed out fire road. There were some long faces
as we covered over that fairly new stretch of trail. But
it is all part of a bigger plan to rework the trail usage
in the forest. Besides, there is a good chance that we
will be getting a new stacked loop on top of the hill
to give us back all of the trail that we gave up and then
some. In the future, users visiting the forest will have
the choice right out of the parking lot, to access the
singletrack or fire roads. This should also help spread
out the users and eliminate future user conflicts. And
as a bonus, it will make it harder for the illegal ATV's
already using the fire roads, to access our singletrack
system. Again a great day overall. --- Norman Blanchette
